Transcending the myths of learning English: Toward developing glocal communication skillsでした。

In language teaching, certain assumptions often influence instructional goals and practices. The current discourse of promoting English language teaching in Japan is built upon the assumptions that English is a useful international language and that being able to communicate orally in English is essential because careers and jobs increasingly require English language skills. While these assumptions reflect current realities to some extent, they do not apply to all contexts.
This presentation reassesses these assumptions and proposes that English language teachers help students develop not only daily conversation skills in English but also global awareness and intercultural competencies within both global and local communities.
Specifically, students are encouraged to develop (1) basic linguistic foundations of English for future needs; (2) reading and writing skills to cope with computer mediated communication; (3) an understanding that English may not be universally useful; (4) attitudes to respect and affirm all kinds of diversity (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, social class, language, age, ability); and (5) willingness and skills to try to communicate with non-English-speaking people. Some concrete suggestions are offered.
